The UW Dept of Global Health E-Learning Program (eDGH) provides a high-quality certificate of completion on vellum paper bearing the official University of Washington Seal. Participants in our professional development courses will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.
Please review the following Frequently Asked Questions:
Do these courses provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?
Participants in eDGH courses are eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The total amount of CEU credit varies by course and is shown on the course information page and will be printed on the certificate earned by participants who successfully complete the course. The credits indicate the total amount of contact hours needed to complete the course, including watching course videos and lectures and performing additional instructional activities including quizzes, discussion forums, and other assignments. Credits are awarded based on a calculation of 0.1 CEUs per instructional contact hour.
These credits are separate from the University of Washington Academic credit but the courses represent an official educational activity of the University and information about the University accreditation can be found at https://www.washington.edu/students/gencat/front/accreditation.html.
Please note these CEU's may not automatically be recognized by certain professional bodies, however, it is possible to submit for review by professional bodies.
What is the value of a course Certificate? (academic equivalency)
Many universities and continuing education entities offer certificates. This term is not universal and means different qualifications depending on the educational program. In this case, our professional development certificates are not equivalent to a post baccalaureate program. However, participants report:
- The benefit of including their Certificate on their resume when applying for jobs or on their applications when applying to educational programs.
- Utilizing the certificate to fulfill continuing education requirements
- Personal and professional growth
What are the course requirements?
Each course may have varying requirements that can be reviewed on the course specific pages. (link to https://edgh.washington.edu/courses) General course requirements may include:
- Regular access to the internet
- Site-Based Participants need to attend a specific percentage of the site group meetings (this does not apply to Independent Participants
- Completing assignments (discussion posts, quizzes, homework, projects) and achieving a score of 70% or higher (in most cases).
Can I get University of Washington credit for this certificate?
International participants should note that the certificate does not count as formal academic credit from the University of Washington. The courses represent an official educational activity of the University and information about the University accreditation can be found at https://www.washington.edu/students/gencat/front/accreditation.html.
Can this certificate qualify as a prerequisite?
Currently our certificate courses are for professional development and do not qualify as prerequisites for University of Washington credit-bearing courses; however some universities will accept the courses as counting toward degree programs through their own processes, usually involving a type of course waiver form. We encourage you to keep a copy of the formal course syllabus, download your grades and provide your certificate to show the work completed. In addition, we are happy to provide you with a letter of confirmation for this process. We have had several participants do this and receive credit.
Can I request a transcript?
As noted above, our certificate courses are for professional development and do not qualify as prerequisites for University of Washington credit-bearing courses. For this reason, we are not able to provide you with a transcript. However, we strongly encourage all participants to keep a copy of the formal course syllabus, download your grades and provide your certificate to show the work completed. In addition, we are happy to provide you with a letter of confirmation upon request.
What jobs can I apply for?
Many respondents to follow up surveys report advancing professionally due to successful completion of an eDGH course. For example, across 8 of our courses 6% report receiving promotions, 38% were given a new set of responsibilities, and 14% qualified for advanced educational programs.
Half (51%) of respondents report mentoring colleagues on what they learned, and 41% reported forming peer networks within their communities to continue peer learning of the course topic. 64% reported contact with students from their sites and reported these connections helped them solve problems that have arisen in the workplace.
An eDGH certificate is not a license or degree; however, our courses can augment and update your education, knowledge and skills.
When will I get my certificate?
Upon successful completion of the course, certificates will be prepared and delivered by email (digital PDF) or printed and shipped to participants or site coordinators (for site-based participants) after:
- the course administrators and faculty have confirmed that participants have met the course requirements
- details are reviewed by a site coordinator (if applicable)
Often this is about 8-12 weeks after the course closes.
